ITU African Cup Troutbeck, Zimbabwe

Thursday 15th November saw Nikki and myself travel up to Zimbabwe for the final ITU African Cup for 2012 in Zimbabwe. This was also going to double as my final International race of my career. The trip to Troutbeck is always longer than expected with the flight JHB to Harare going without a hitch. Zimbabwe Triathlon put on a complimentary bus to Troutbeck, four and a half hours drive from Harare. By the time we trundled into the hotel parking bay it wa...

London 2012 Olympic Race 7th Aug 1130am

Posted by Chris Felgate on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, In : 2012 Racing

After a restless night of sleep, I woke somewhere between 0600 and 0630hrs, watched my usual youtube videos that take my mind to a place where I can start to visualise what is about to happen in a few hours’ time. I had managed to find some oats at one of the Olympic Village cafes the day before, which I promptly had for breakfast. Wayne, my manager, had gone off to McDonalds to get my (and our) standard Cappuccino with an extra 2 shots of espresso. (I am a caffeine addict, developed fr...

ITU WTS Race Kitzbuehel

Posted by Chris Felgate on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, In : 2012 Racing
This WTS race in Austria would be my first of its kind and a chance to test out how I would fare against the best in the world. I had been implementing some new things in training so wanted to see what would happen in a race format, especially with the Olympics in mid. The trip to Kitzbuehel, a popular winter skiing town in the Austrian mountains, was quite arduous with the flight from JHB to Frankfurt, two trains to Frankfurt main station then another train to Munich Main station. I wa...

Olympic Qualification Update

Posted by Chris Felgate on Thursday, May 24, 2012, In : 2012 Racing
At this point in time, I am currently waiting for the ITU Olympic Qualification period to end, at the end of May. This has been a two year period and there have been many ups and downs. I am currently leading the African New Flag position for the Olympics after competing twice in South Africa, Mauritius, Brazil, China and the Philippines in 2012 alone. However, my closest rival, Mehdi Essadiq from Morocco is 184 points behind me going into the final race in the Olympic Qualification cycle, in...

ITU China and Philippines Asian Cups

Posted by Chris Felgate on Thursday, May 10, 2012, In : 2012 Racing

The trip to Fuzhou- China, via Hong Kong went as well as long haul travel can go. No miss haps and even managed to get on a complimentary bus to the host hotel. China is a very ‘different’ country, well I guess, if you are ‘Westernised’ that is! There are large cultural differences such as smoking in restaurants, elevators, in your face and of course spitting everywhere. The food is also tricky and the only things one can recognise are rice and noodles, however, these are generally ...

All Africa Champs (Mauritius) and Pan American Cup (Brazil)

Posted by Chris Felgate on Friday, April 13, 2012, In : 2012 Racing
The All Africa Championships were held in Mauritius on the 31st March and was going to decide the future direction of my triathlon career. The focus of my latter career has been to qualify for the London Olympics as the African New Flag. Essentially this entails being the highest ranked non-South African, African. Up to the African Champs, my 2012 did not get off to a great start, as can be seen from the previous posts. I had to beat Mehdi Essadiq from Morocco, my main contender for th...

SA Champs Port Elizabeth

Posted by Chris Felgate on Friday, April 13, 2012, In : 2012 Racing
Sunday 17th March was set to be one of the most crucial races in terms of earning ITU points and moving up my position on the world rankings. I made the trip down to PE on the Friday prior to the race to try and rest up before a busy Saturday whereby had to combine my pre- race warm up with my work has BSG Elite Team manager. We had a full Elite squad down in PE racing so had to make sure they were all sorted as well as myself prior to the race. The 23 strong mens field was small but ...

Mometum I Flex National Duathlon Series Race 1

Posted by Chris Felgate on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, In : 2012 Racing
The start of the duathlon season has kicked off nice and early this year with the first event in the Momentum I flex National Series kicking off just outside Pretoria (road event of 5km run/40km bike/2.5km run). For me, duathlons are not the nicest or easiest forms of racing- I definitely love a water leg in the race! Anyway, they are a necessary form of evil and something I force myself to do, to work on my weaker disciplines. I didnt rest going into the race and literally it came slap...

ITU African Cup CTN

Posted by Chris Felgate on Thursday, February 23, 2012, In : 2012 Racing
This race was always going to be 'a tough day out', mainly because I am not a sprint race athlete and secondly, there were two previous World Champions racing on the day. BSG's Wian, Abrahm and myself flew down on Saturday, with the race being on Sunday. I always say this once done, but it is sometimes better to get to a race with one day off in between, especially when there is a trek from your house to the airport to the place where you are staying etc. Anyway, after getting to our ac...

JHB City TriSeries

Posted by Chris Felgate on Saturday, February 11, 2012, In : 2012 Racing
Sunday 4th Feb saw the second event in the JHB City Triseries. I wanted to try and top my 3rd place in the 1st event in the series, however, I knew would have my work cut out, as I went into the race quite tired based on the training I have been doing. As I am now entering a crucial time in my racing and training period, as I try and qualify for the London Olympics (cut off being 31st May), I cant afford to taper for too many races as I have to focus on the bugger events such as SA and...
